Afriqve Ancienne

This appears to be a Ptolemic "perspective" of Africa. It is obvious that Mallet knew somewhat better about the interior of Africa based upon his map of the sources of the Nile. Here he seems to be taking a very accurate outline of the continent and filling it with Ptolemic content.

Similar erroneous content can be found on the North Africa map by Mallet.

It is also of note that he included the Mountains of the Moon as what appears to be the source of the Nile. Arrowsmith has these in his map of East Africa. Both engravers, in each instance, attribute the contents of the map to other sources, either Ancient or otherwise. It would be nearly two centuries (from the engraving of this map) before the interior of the continent would be known to western map makers to the clarity that this map is drawn.
