Some notes on this print:
This is an early 19th century copy of a 17th century map.
Outaouacs was the name of one tribe but was attributed to many groups of Indians by the French.
My translation of the French text in the cartouche should only be considered an attempt rather than an authoritative translation.
The scale of lieues shows the lake to be (approximately) 145 lieue across (east to west) and 40 lieue across (north to south) both at the widest points. With an actual distance of (approximately) 360 and 160 respectively, it is hard to tell what measurement of a lieue we should use. (The length of a lieue varied over time). If we use 2.48 miles to a lieue the distance east to west is highly accurate with the north to south distance being rather short. This would be consistent with the flattened perspective of the lake compared to the actual shoreline.
